ARLEE — The Friends of Arlee Schools has awarded six seniors from Arlee High School scholarships that total $7,000.
The scholarship program was started in 2000 and has raised more than $100,000 for 76 students over the past 12 years.
The recipients of this year’s scholarships are Dustin Baker, Zack Tamler, Charles Lytle, Jenna Pablo, Hailey Sturgis and Anna Marie Greenwood.
The annual Buttercup Run hosted by the Friends of Arlee Schools raises all of the money for the scholarships.
“We really want to help these kids,” said Merrill Bradshaw, a Friends board member. “We love to give away money, and we are always excited to do that at the end of the year.”
Bradshaw said the group usually receive five to nine applications each year and always give money to everyone who applies. The only requirements are that seniors submit a 250-word essay, a letter of recommendation and transcript. According to Bradshaw, the board evaluates the student’s involvement in school and the community.
“We want to know educational goals or objectives. It doesn’t have to be a definitive career; we just want to know what they are pointing to,” Bradshaw said.
Once students are awarded a scholarship, they can use the money any way they see fit.
“Every child is a success story,” Bradshaw said. “It wouldn’t help without the community, supporters and donors.”
