RONAN – Turning the last corner during the third annual 4-H 5k Fun Run, Megan Evelo and Payton Cates were fighting for the first place finish. “We were really close, but at that corner he stopped to take a break,” Evelo said. “I got a little ahead, but he caught up again … it was a fun last part of the race.” Evelo held her lead and finished with a time of 24 minutes and 13 seconds and Cates finished in a close second just four seconds after Evelo. “I really like to run,” Evelo said, who is also a 4-H member. “It is good to support the club I am a part of.” The run started behind Glacier Bank and took the roughly 25 participants all around Ronan. 4-H Council Secretary Brandy Chisholm was cheering the runners on at different locations throughout the race. “We are doing this to raise money for these kids to go to camps and do different activities around Lake County,” Chisholm said. “We also raise money for 4-H scholarships to benefit their futures.” Other runners like Pat Bristol, who has put in 30 years of work at the Lake County Extension Office, came out to support 4-H. “Even though I am retired, I still run and this was a great opportunity to do that,” Bristol said. Bristol enjoyed running with her friend Yvette Reynolds. “We are running buddies,” Reynolds said. “The hardest part was the different types of surfaces … gravel, grass, etc.” As the last few runners crossed the finish line, everyone stayed to eat fresh fruit and enjoy each other’s company. “It is family orientated and it is a great way to get the community involved,” Chisholm said.
