Editor,

This past spring the Breastfeeding Coalition of the Mission Valley organized three different events featuring Camie Goldhammer speaking about Historical Trauma and its affect on breastfeeding in Native American communities. Goldhammer is the founder of the Native American Breastfeeding Coalition of Washington and is very well known for her work on promoting breastfeeding in Native American communities across the country.

The Coalition collaborated with several organizations in the community to organize these great events, including The Nest, Lake County Public Health, the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes Teen Parent Assist Fund, the CSKT Health and Wellness Committee, Salish Kootenai College Psychology Department, and SKC Community Health and Development.

As president of the Breastfeeding Coalition of the Mission Valley and Lead Resident Advocate for The Nest, I join with collaborators to acknowledge all the wonderful food donations that were made from the following Polson businesses: The Cove Deli & Pizza, Vinny’s Ca-fé, Mrs. Wonderful’s Marmalade Café, Cherries BBQ Pit, MacKenzie River Pizza Company, Subway, Super 1 Foods, Safeway, Mountain Mama Birth Services and Mission Mountain Natural Foods.

Having more support groups and outreach activities are some of the goals of The Breastfeeding Coalition of the Mission Valley, in an effort to support and promote breastfeeding in our communities and The Nest is happy to help. “Nursing at the Nest” meets twice a month. On the second Monday and fourth Friday of each month from 10:30 a.m.–noon, pregnant women, moms, dads, friends, children, and all other supporters are welcome to come and learn and share about numerous breastfeeding topics. The Nest is located at 410 St. Mary’s Drive in St. Ignatius. Call 406- 745-3757 if you have questions, or would like more information. Our next meeting is Fri-day, July 22, and we will have snacks, goodie bags and door prizes.
