ST. IGNATIUS – The 34th Good Old Days Celebration weekend starts Friday.

“It’s a fun way for everyone to get together and have fun,” said Janis Heffern, coordinator.

The annual event is put on by the St. Ignatius Chamber of Commerce.“We do this as a way to give back to the community,” she said, although people from near and far attend the event.

The celebration kicks off Friday at the Mission School District with the fourth annual Little Miss and Mister Good Old Days Pageant where dozens of crowns will be handed out in different categories. Children 0-18 can register before the event. Call Pam Thompson for more information at 406-396-7838.

The day continues with a dessert contest at 4 p.m. and barbecue at 5:30 p.m. A free concert begins at 7:30 p.m. with Valley Creek Band playing some tunes. Fireworks will be set off at dusk.

People can wake up early on Saturday for pancakes at 7 a.m. at the Senior Center and the 33rd Annual Buffalo Run on Main Street. What is considered to be the longest parade in the county is also gearing up for the event, and it starts at noon.

Races of all kinds from dogs to small lawn mower engines start at 1 p.m. at the park. A tractor show is scheduled from 2-4 p.m. More food vendors will set up shop this year. Family games, including sack races, start at 2 p.m.

Heffern organized the first tugof- war event a few years ago and it continues this year. The old fashioned fun includes two teams vying to see if they can pull each other into a pit of mud. Several teams of all ages can sign up before the event. It starts at 2:30 p.m.

“Make sure you show up early and have your team ready,” she said.

Her shoes still have mud stains from organizing the event in previous years.

“Wear something you don’t care if it doesn’t get clean again,” she said.

The day wraps up with a movie night at the amphitheater starting at 7:30 p.m. and a pizza-eating contest provided by Cornerstone Ministries.

On Sunday, a huckleberry pancake breakfast is held at the St. Ignatius Airport at 8 a.m. Young Eagle rides won’t be given this year due to insurance reasons, but plenty of food and prizes will be available.
