Editor,
Having grown up in the ‘30s and ‘40s on a 125-acre dairy farm in southern Wisconsin near Delavan (1940 pop. 3,444), when I moved here in 1992 I found the Mission Valley social and economic environment was not all that different from my old home. One thing that has change dramatically over these 75-plus years, however, is the stability of the family unit and how it affects our young people at very critical stages in their learning and growth.
I am on the board of a local 501(c)(3) not-for profit corporation Onward & Upward, Inc. Our Vision and Mission statements are as follows:
Vision Statement: “To assist in facilitating sustainable civic, educational, and spiritual projects that benefit youth, those in need, and the communities throughout the Mission Valley in general.”
—Mission Statement: “To serve as a coordinating body for sustainable civic, educational, and spiritual projects that promote self-worth, build strong communities, and foster hope among the residents of the Mission Valley and beyond.”
Onward & Upward’s facilitating and coordinating work is a vital part of the efforts up and down this valley in helping our youth, and others, at critical points in their lives. Grant writing and distribution of necessary operating funds for programs meeting O&U’s Vision and Mission will truly be a boon to the educational and performance advancement of our youth population.
The needs are great. It takes money, programs, and effective mentoring. Does it actually take a village to raise a child? In our present day environment it surely does in our view. We feel that recognizing the needs and helping our communities in answering these needs with effective solutions is vital right now.
Onward & Upward stands ready to be fully involved in community building and helping advance our educational, social, and economic structures with special emphasis on our youth population.
