Bulldogs fall to Chiefs

ST. IGNATIUS — Shot consistency was the downfall of the Bulldog boys’ tennis team as they faced off against the Ronan Chiefs April 3. The Bulldogs were steamrolled by the Chiefs 6-0, but according to head coach Kimimi Ashley, her players didn’t go down without a fight.
“Straight across the board on all of the players, there were too many unforced errors,” Ashley explained. “That is a common high school player thing, to have the winner be the player who committed the least errors, not who hit the most winners.”
She said despite the fact that all of the boys played to a third set or tie breaks, only more time on the court will prepare them for getting past unforced errors and taking advantage of opportunities to make runs on points.
Ronan’s Hunter Shima defeated Karl Daniels, 6-5, 0-6, 6-4; Kyle Yankey beat Felix Sonntag, 7-6 (7), 6-3; Joey Dresen defeated Chris Camel, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3; and Ronny Cullis took down Troy Brontrager, 6-1, 7-6 (2).
“Chris Camel made some hurdles in not only his playing, but in the mental part of his game,” Ashley said. “Even though he lost, he took it to a third set and just didn’t give the game away. I felt very good about the maturity that he showed on the day.”
On the girls’ side, the Lady Bulldogs pulled out one win, with Alexis Paul defeating Hannah Kiehn, 6-2, 7-6 (4). St. Ignatius’ Cierra Dougherty lost to Amber Metzger, 6-0, 6-0; Brianna Frank defeated Kayla Billette, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5; and Hannah BirdRattler defeated Briar Ahlborn, 6-0, 6-2. In doubles, Randi Butterfly and Laura Eggeling lost to Ronan’s Taylor Courville and Katelyn Matkovich, 6-0, 6-0.
The Mission girls’ tennis team traveled to Superior Tuesday, boys and girls travel to Bigfork Thursday and the girls are again on the road against Darby Saturday.
