Editor,
Last Friday, I attended a football game between the Ronan Chiefs and the Deer Lodge Wardens. As I waited for kick-off, I thought about the recent trend in our country in which “professional” sportsmen have chosen to draw attention to their political issues by public display of disrespect for our national anthem.
Last year, we didn’t think about whether to stand, sit, or kneel. We simply stood out of habit. And while our attention, and ire, may be drawn to those who now choose to sit or kneel, I would like to point out those who still choose to stand. You see, we have been reminded that we have a choice. You’re not compelled to stand if you choose not to.
Well, I mused long enough; starting lineup introductions done, school song played, etc. As I rise to face the flag, I catch in my view two lines of uniforms on opposite sidelines, standing silently and respectfully. The only sound is the anthem playing and the only motion is the gentle wave of the flag.
And so today, I would like to point out the young men on the sidelines who set a good example. I would also like to recognize coaches, parents and community leaders in Ronan and in Deer Lodge for teaching a generation of young men to show respect. I’m proud of you all.
I’m counting on you in the coming years to teach NFL players how it’s done.
