Libraries have changed significantly since the days when I was in school. We always had to be very quiet and would get “shushed” by the librarians if we were chatting too loudly. Libraries were for studying and quietly reading. Well, let me tell you, libraries have changed significantly since those days. Today, children are encouraged to play, learn and explore the library. We have a “Lively Library” in Polson with many children’s programs that encourage expression. This fall our youth librarian, Kendra Mullison, has created a fun Story Time program around the song “My Favorite Things.” Each week there is a theme related to a line in the song. Join us on Thursdays at 10 a.m. or 4 p.m. in the Library to take part in this musical Story Time. For kids who love to create, the Library offers a free Makerspace session for kids on Mondays from 3:30-5:30 p.m. We offer fun and creative toys like LEGOs, robotics, sewing, and many other arts and crafts. This program ties into the STEM movement enacted in many schools. To end the week with fun (and popcorn) kids can join us for games or movies on Fridays starting at 3:45 p.m.
Have you or your children wondered about your family history? Thanksgiving is a wonderful opportunity to talk with family members about your ancestors. Do your roots trace back to Plymouth Rock and the first Thanksgiving? Would you like to find out? The Library offers two ancestry research tools. HeritageQuest is a tool that you can access from anywhere with your library card number and PIN. You can search Census records, city directories and several other databases. If you would like to do further digging, you can access Ancestry.com using the library’s computers so you can complete the missing links in your family tree. We hope that the Library offers you items and resources that you enjoy. Please take a few minutes to complete our survey to tell us more about what the Library can do for you. You will find a link posted on our website www.northlakecountylibrary.org and on our Facebook page. Remember to always check the Calendar section and our Facebook page for updates on the happenings at the Library.
