Barbara Jean Bigg

ST. IGNATIUS – Barbara Jean Biggs, 82, enjoyed helping people, reading books, and dipping her toes in the Flathead Lake. She died surrounded by her family on Dec. 17, 2016, from complications with dementia.

She was born in Nebraska in 1934 during the Great Depression that taught her to save and recycle: “Waste not, want not.” She graduated from high school in California and worked as a manual switchboard operator for the phone company.

In 1953, she married George Biggs and moved to Montana. The couple spent 63 years together, building a logging business, developing a farm, and raising four children (John, Tim, Cindy, and Scott).

She was in her thirties during the first moon landing and was fascinated by science. She followed politics, studied history, and went to church. She eventually made it to college when her kids were raised and earned a degree in social work at the University of Montana with the desire to help children.

Her grandkids and great-grandkids kept her busy later in life. She grew countless gardens, picked berries, canned food, made apple juice, knit socks, and loved her family.
