RONAN – Frenchtown slipped by Ronan 34-31 to win the championship round on Saturday during the Dave Edington Western Montana Duals, an event hosted by the Chiefs.

The Chiefs made their way to the championship round by defeating Arlee 74-0, Townsend 61-12, Bigfork 59-9, Flathead 42-27 and Columbia Falls 32-27 during the two-day event.

Noah Cheff (132), Tyler Houle (160) and Ethan Christopher (285) had pins for the Chiefs in the finale.

An extra bit of excitement was added to the event by a visit from the traveling Japanese National Wrestling team. “Everyone loved the Japanese wrestlers being here,” Chiefs’ head wrestling coach James Muir said. “It was awesome to have them come in. They are a very high caliber wrestling team. It was fun to see them.”

Several of the valley’s grapplers jumped at the opportunity to mix it up with the Japanese wrestlers.

“It was great,” Arlee wrestler George Shick said. “I would like to do it again some time. It would be fun.”

“It was a lot of fun,” Mission-Charlo wrestler Gus Bosley said.

Bosley won his match 4-2. Along with the victory came a bloody lip from an errant knee. “You get a little beat up in wrestling,” Bosley said.

Elsewhere, the Polson Pirates wrestled during the weekend at the Tom LeProwse Invitational tournament in Bozeman, placing eleventh at the 27-team meet.

Pirates’ Bridger Wenzel (132) placed fourth, Parker Adler (138) was fifth and Noah Humphrey (182) and Hunter Fritsch (160) both took sixth.
