Editor,
The conflict between the Water Protectors at Standing Rock and the Dakota Access Pipeline Corporation has made clear that our long history of exploiting Native Americans for corporate gain has not changed – and it has also been clear that Native American protesters were treated far more roughly than white protestors on the same issue. More broadly, the power of private military/police forces employed by corporations should be disturbing to us all. Now, instead of performing a full EIS, as previously decided on, the Army has chosen to go back on its word, to go against their own processes, and to put people in harm’s way for an unjust cause. We may be facing, as a nation, an enormous tragedy that could have easily been averted – and we will be making a statement to an already-concerned world that the U.S. no longer stands for justice and equal rights. Please write your representatives and the Army Corps of Engineers to tell them to perform a full EIS.
