Editor,

Lately as I think of our energy requirements, while I burn wood and propane, I settle on the race to the moon. Leaders who believed harnessed the power of the human brain to solve complex problems.

I task our state to embrace a shift in energy production. Fossil fuels have allowed incredible advances. Let’s celebrate that heritage. However, we know, indisputably, burning fossil fuels releases neurotoxins and carcinogens. We know Montana’s riches do not stop at our mineral wealth. We are the Big Sky Country with a plethora of sunshine and wind to harvest. Young, eager minds nourished by our Big Sky are ready to offer solutions. Tap the Coal Trust Fund to transform Coal Strip into a nexus for clean energy. The community has an incredibly dedicated work force. Why not make it a hub for manufacturing and move our energy generation into the 21st Century?

The world is shifting to clean energy. Global businesses and leaders are embracing sustainable practices. In the United States solar and wind industries are seeing 20 percent job growth annually. In our country, the renewable energy economy now employs more than four million people.

Montanans need not drag our feet into this new century but run head first into the wind, sun at our backs.
