Editor,
Republican Senator Fitzgerald introduced SB 305 to allow counties to conduct mail-in elections to fill the congressional seat vacated by Ryan Zinke. The bill passed through the Senate with a non-partisan vote.
This bill was supported by a large majority of County Commissioners and County Election Clerks. A mail-in election would save counties, statewide, over $500,000.
The House Republicans killed this bill as they indicated that a mail-in election would give Democrats increased turnout. Wow, I thought our government wanted more people to be involved and vote. So, this non–partisan bill was killed by the House Republicans and will cost each county more money. For example, Lake County already has budget woes and this just adds to its problems.
Your local Republican representative will give you a whole list of reasons why this was not a good bill even though it was okay for the Senate. So look carefully at their “excuses.” Remember this shameless attempt to discourage voting when you next vote for your representative in November 2018.
