Editor,
The Flathead District Board, Paul Guenzler, Janette Rosman, Dave Lake, Bruce White and one vacant seat have been talking about a withdrawal from the JBC. Bruce White is the exception. Is this for their own self-interest and that of their handlers? We, the irrigators, risk much if we allow their illusion of grandeur to be pressed upon us.
The FIP will stay in BIA control. The irrigators proved that they can operate FIP far more efficient than the BIA and with a smaller qualified crew.
BIA control means a minimum increase of $7.50 O&M, with added increases in the future.
Losing the low block of power could mean:
Power for Irrigation will increase.
Power to residential homes will increase.
The pumping plant power bill will increase. Only 38,000 acres of the 75,000 acres benefit from the pumping plant. The compact covers $100,000. The current cost of pumping is approximately $300,000.
The pumping plant bill will be placed entirely upon the Flathead district instead of being spread throughout the project. This will also apply to litigation, of which there will be much.
This withdrawal will benefit a small group of irrigators, but many will suffer the financial consequences. Do these three board members have an agenda or are they acting on their own self-importance?
In the Charlo area, Janette has never held a meeting to hear her constituent’s opinions, but has met with Paul and Dave’s constituents. Is her loyalty north of her division?
I don’t always agree with the FJBC but for the reasons above I realize that the districts standing together is far, far stronger than the three divided.
For the good of all irrigators call your commissioners and demand the withdrawal not happen.
