RONAN – A solid rushing attack and a relentless defensive presence allowed the Chiefs to control the ball from the beginning as they held Deer Lodge scoreless during their homecoming bout, winning 33-0.
“Our defense played exceptionally well,” head coach Jim Benn said. “They didn’t allow a single yard rushing in the game.”
Dalton Molzhon got the game rolling when he completed a 57-yard pass from senior quarterback Robbie Gauthier during the opening quarter. Marcus Hungerford followed with a 7-yard pass score, and also completed a 6-yard run for a touchdown in the third quarter.
Senior running back and this year’s homecoming king, Chris Clary, added a pair of touchdowns on runs of 7 and 1 yards. Ronan finished the game with 302 yards on the ground and 77 yards in the air.
Senior running back Jake Skelton had 23 carries for 147 yards, while Jack Humphreys ran the ball six times for 50 yards. Molzhon’s 57-yard reception for a touchdown was the longest of the night, with Clary adding one reception for 13 yards.
With the win, Ronan improves to 4-1. Deer Lodge fell to 0-5.
Ronan hosts Loyola at home Friday on senior night. To prepare, Benn plans on keying in on their main offensive threats.
“They are running option out of the pistol, and they have excellent playmakers at the receiver and running back and a big dual threat quarterback,” Benn said. “Defensively, they are going to load the box.”
