POLSON — Actors from the Port Polson Players Theatre Kids Camp were completing their chalk drawings on the steps of the John Dowdall Theatre in preparation for the “P” party 2 and 7 p.m. performances on June 18. For the “P” party, campers brought foods or items to share that begin with the letter p.

Karen and Neal Lewing wrote and directed “Truth is Marching On,” the play prepared and performed during the 2011 camp. Campers began learning lines and songs on June 13 and presented their performance June 18. The play had a loose theme, Neal said, with a Civil War soldiers vignette, a section about Betsy Ross and the flag and another featuring George Washington and the cherry tree. Camp participants also wrote group cheers, did historical feature presentations, a couple recited amazing facts during the performance and the kids choreographed some songs.

Camper Mesa McKee said her part of the play was “mostly about troops in the Civil War, how they freed the slaves, the songs they sang and the letters they wrote home.”

“Mostly we sing a lot of songs and say a lot of lines,” Mesa explained.
