Editor,

Recently I went into my bank and requested my $20 bill be converted into three fives and five ones. I was absolutely shocked when I had to prove that I was a customer of the bank in order for the teller to meet my request. If the bank is seeking to have zero losses it will never happen. Starting a banking career in 1952 I witnessed ingenious scams in which one or more institutions lost much more than a $20 bill. The old saying that “if you create a smarter mouse trap-someone will invent smarter mice” is a truism.

On that very same day of my trip into the bank I sat at a lunch table with five other acquaintances and spoke of my unpleasant experience. To my surprise four of the five expressed disgust that they too had a similar experience. One gentleman stated that he was going to close his account. Another at the table was considering doing the same. All were dismayed at the loss of expected service. Where are we headed? First the airlines started treating us like cattle and now the banks are treating us like crooks. If they are seeking Utopia, they will never find it.
