Editor,
Hello, my name is Julian C. “Chuck” Courville. After much discussion with friends, family and community members, I have decided to announce my candidacy for Tribal Council serving the Ronan District.
Born and raised in St. Ignatius, I left after high school in 1970 to pursue a military career which took me and my family throughout the United States and two tours overseas. My family and I returned home in 1982. The military instilled in me a respect for community and a belief that public service is a way to strengthen that community. I spent 25 years working for the Flathead Indian Irrigation Project, and another six years as the Flathead Agency Superintendent. Having retired in 2013, I feel I am lucky enough to be in a position where I can devote more of my time and energy to my community.
My career allowed me to interact with many different individuals on a daily basis, from elders to youth, irrigators to loggers, Tribal Council to state and federal agencies. In my time as Superintendent I worked on issues such as the Water Rights Compact, Tribal Fee to Trust Land Program, Fisheries/Irrigation Biological Opinion, Land Buyback Program just to name a few. I recognize and understand many of the issues facing our community and believe my solid background and ability to build working relationships will bring a positive and productive voice to the Tribal Council.
The Tribal Council needs strong leaders who come to the table with ideas. If given the opportunity, I would treat this position as one of public service, not politics. I want to do all I can to contribute to preserving all that is great about our Reservation, and to make it an even better place to live, work and raise a family in the future.
You can reach me via email to discuss any issues at chuck54623@outlook.com. I will also be on the CSKT Policy and Affairs Group Facebook site. I will be visiting as many of you as I can in the coming weeks.
I hope I can count on your vote on Oct. 21, in the primary election.
Julian C. “Chuck” Courville
