POLSON — Six seniors from around the Mission Valley each received a new laptop computer and a wireless printer on April 7. Mission Valley Elks Lodge No.1695 scholarship chair Robert Byers presented Polson high school seniors Kelsey Koberg, Clint Cooper, Peregrine Frissell and Michael Venters with the electronics. St. Ignatius seniors Sarah Bowers and Mitchell Bear Don’t Walk also were recipients but could not attend the dinner. This is the first year the Elks have presented computers to their scholarship winners. In the past, students have received cash scholarships.
At a prime rib dinner held at the Elks lodge, Exalted Ruler Dick Schultz presented Penny Jarecki, president of the Greater Polson Community Foundation, with the Elks Citizen of the Year award for her hard work and leadership.
Elk Dick Wiese received the lodge’s first honorary life membership, which means the Mission Valley Elks will pay his dues for the rest of his lifetime.
Tony Friscia was honored with officer of the year, and member of the year was Matt Dougherty.
The Elks also presented a $1,845 check for St. Luke’s Hospital. Linda Cox, a nurse at St. Luke’s and a 30-year employee, accepted the check. Thanking the Elks, Cox told Schultz the money would be used to purchase a “bear hugger,” a special blanket that warms patients up when they are in shock.
After a short intermission, the Elks installed new officers. Matt Barry will take the helm as Exalted Ruler for the next year.
