Editor,
I would like to correct the media on the Vegas shooting. The entire nationwide media has been printing and saying that this shooting massacre is the worst in U.S. history. I beg to differ. These are just a few of the mass shootings I found, there are many, many more. I will begin with Wounded Knee Massacre - 250 men, women and children were massacred in 1890. In 1853, 450 Tolowa Indians were massacred during a prayer ceremony. In 1863 near Preston, Idaho 280 Shoshone men, women and children were massacred by a U.S. Army regiment. In 1861 there were 240 Wailakis Natives slaughtered in Round Valley California, most were women and children. In 1868 U.S. 7th Cavalry led by G.A. Custer attacked a village of sleeping Cheyenne killing 140 men, women and children and took 53 hostages, killed hundreds of ponies and burned down an entire village. In 1871 there was the Camp Grant Massacre, a group of Americans and Mexicans led by William Oury killed 144 Apache men and women and sold 29 children to slavery. In 1864 there was the Oak Run Massacre where California settlers killed 300 Yana Indians who gathered at Oak Run for a spiritual ceremony. In 1860 there was the Indian Island massacre where 250 Wiyots were killed in three different attacks, most were women, children and elders.
These massacres might have been a long time ago, but they did happen and on American soil. So yes, the Vegas shooting is a terrible tragedy, but it’s not the worst. To see the entire list of Native American massacres go to: Indian massacres on Wikipedia.
