Dear Editor,
I am an olster, approaching 90 years in age and am retired from the US Forest Service.
On Dec. 23, after a heavy snow fall of 12 to 15 inches from the night before, I decided to shovel some of the snow in front of my garage door in Jette Meadows. We have a sizeable driveway and our friend from church, who often plows for us, didn’t show up.
Shoveling this amount of snow for us olsters is not a fun thing, more so because of my age. I would scoop up a shovel of snow then toss it off the driveway. After a couple of scoops, I would rest a while and lean on the shovel.
That afternoon I was sitting in my chair in a warm house and hear a noise outside. Looking through the window, I see this guy with what looked like a brand new snow blower and a younger person shoveling my driveway. I went outside to see who this person was and introduce myself. I found out he was a neighbor that lived about a half-mile from our place. His name was Eric Scott.
Eric told me that he had seen me leaning on a shovel as he passed the house and felt the urge to help. He brought his brand new snow blower, a Christmas gift from his wife, and started in to clean off the snow. His son was by his side shoveling. About a half-hour later, a car stops and there is Eric’s wife with a shovel in her hand along with another child that also had a shovel in his hand. Gee, I had the entire family helping to clean the snow from my driveway. I offered to pay him but it was declined, so I insisted and he took it.
Thank you Eric and family for your kindness. What a great Christmas present that was.
All I could say was “Wow.” It is refreshing to know that there still are some wonderful people around willing to help.
