Ronan Post No. 138 would like to introduce its new junior shooting sports team. In conjunction with the Lake County 4-H Shooting and Archery Club, Post No. 138 of Ronan now has a crack shooting team.
On Jan. 20 the team held its first postal match in which competitors fire on their home ranges using targets which have been marked for identification. The fired targets are then sent to the American Legion for scoring and ranking for awards. The three positions are: prone, standing and kneeling. These timed events and targets are engaged with .177 caliber pellet air rifles that are usually acquired through the Civilian Marksmanship Program. The rifles are either pump or CO2, and must have a velocity of less then 600 fps and cost $600 or less. This team not only had some great shots but are a very nice and polite group of kids. Conner Cornwell set three state records last year.
Shooting sports is less about creating a great shooter and more about the discipline and commitment involved. While the team awaits the results of their postal match they will be in a tournament on Feb. 10 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the William K. Harvey Gym.
