RONAN — Several K. William Harvey Elementary students got to show some gratitude last week.

Nine fourth-graders in a leadership group distributed gift baskets to emergency responders and police officers in town.

The students, who are part of the inaugural leadership group put together by second-grade teacher Alicia Hakes, put together gift baskets with popcorn, cocoa, tea, cider, Emergen-C and candy.

Hakes came up with the idea to acknowledge “the best of the best,” students who have good grades, attendance and behavior.

The students have also made Christmas stockings with residents at a local nursing home and played games with the residents during another visit last year.

“My kids really liked the nursing home,” Hakes said prior to last week’s gift basket distribution.

The leadership group meets once a month. Sometimes they go on a trip outside the school and other times they use the time to plan a future activity.

Hakes said another group of students will rotate into the leadership group this month.
