As the firearms rights/restrictions debate intensifies across our nation, I respectfully offer this brief commentary.
The Constitution of the United States of America, as the supreme law of the land, is the organic legal document from which all other laws emanate and must abide.
Amendment II, one powerful sentence in length, purports to inalienably secure the right of the people to keep and bear arms. However, none of the Bill of Rights are wholly absolute in their applicable nature and scope. Honestly arrived interpretive opinions do differ. For example, what is: “a well regulated Militia”; what constitutes “Arms,” or what does it mean to “bear” Arms, all as are found in Amendment II?
It is my wish that sooner, rather than later, the Supreme Court of the United States of America, as the final arbiter, will seize the opportunity to definitively speak on Amendment II, thus serving as authoritative guidance to federal and state lawmakers as they attempt to move forward on this pivotal issue. The right time is now.
