Editor,
Friends, we will soon be thinking about yard work – mowing lawns, trimming trees and shrubs, etc. I’m sure there are other senior citizens like myself who need help. I had an unpleasant experience late this fall. I had not been able to get leaves raked and I called the fellow who had been mowing my lawn and helping me for 4 or 5 years. I had not had a problem before, but I could hardly believe what I was seeing when I got my bill. He charged me for 12.5 hours at $30 an hour. The total bill was $378. He would not budge on the price so I had it to pay. That was a big chunk out of my social security check for the next month. Next time I will surely get an estimate first. I was just too trusting. This is just meant as a warning to others like me. I don’t think there are many jobs that pay $30 an hour in our valley; certainly not raking leaves.
