HAMILTON - For the second time in their last three games, the Lady Pirates needed just five innings to pick up a Class A softball win as Polson downed Hamilton 12-1 in non-conference action Thursday.
Shay Duford gave up just four hits to pick up her fourth win this season for Polson while Ashley Johnson and Kylie Knutson led the way at the plate for the Lady Pirates, combining to go 4-6 with four RBI.
Polson picked up nine hits in 24 at-bats in a contest that saw the Lady Pirates jump out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the opening inning. Neither team scored again until the top of the third, when Polson added another three runs to go up 6-0.
The Lady Pirate bats were far from done, though, as Polson doubled its lead with six more runs in the top of the fourth to take a commanding 12-0 advantage.
Hamilton's lone run came in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Rebecca Lyons.
Knutson went 2-3 with an RBI and a double for Polson, Johnson was 2-3 with a pair of runs batted in, Sallie Sams was 1-3 with two RBI and Martina Marquardt was also 1-3 with two RBI. Duford and Heidi Rausch also picked up hits and RBI for Polson while Makaliah Wilson chipped in with a single.
The Lady Pirates overcame a sluggish start to pick up a Northwestern A Conference win Tuesday as they downed rival Ronan, 5-3.
Coming off a 46-0 win over Whitefish in their previous game, the Lady Pirates had trouble finding their offense early as the Maidens jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Lindsay Clairmont picked up a one-out single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ashleigh Lynch and scored on a single by Turquoise Haggard.
Polson tied things up in the top of the fourth inning when Rausch got things started with a walk. Rausch moved to third on a double past a lunging fielder in right by Shay Duford. Rausch crossed the plate on a passed ball moments later to knot the score at one.
Ronan regained the lead with a pair of runs courtesy of a two-out rally in the bottom of the inning. The rally started with a two-out walk by Haggard, who moved to second on a single by Alex Dulmes. Alaina Madsen brought both runners home with a double to put the Maidens up 3-1.
Polson again had an answer in the top of the fifth as Kodi Woods led off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Kayla Duford brought Woods home with a single and Sams followed with an RBI triple to right to tie the game at three.
Ronan had a chance to answer in the bottom of the inning as Katie Andrews was hit by a pitch and awarded first, but she was tagged out trying to reach third on a single by Payge DeLaurenti moments later.
Polson took its first lead in the top of the sixth as Shay Duford led off with a triple and scored moments later as Ronan misplayed a bunt down the third-base line by Knutson. Johnson followed with a single through the hole to bring in Knutson, and Johnson later scored on a double by Woods to put Polson up 6-3.
Ronan would not go away, though, as Haggard, Dulmes and Madsen picked up consecutive singles to load the bases in the bottom of the sixth. Marissa McCrea followed with a single to bring in Haggard, and Dulmes scored on a fielder's choice ball by Bethany Coleman to cut the Lady Pirate lead to 6-5. Shay Duford escaped further damage by striking out Andrews to end the inning.
Polson added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Sams walked, moved to second on a single by Shay Duford and scored when the Maidens misplayed a ball hit to third.
Ronan almost came up with some magic in the bottom of the seventh as Lynch picked up a two-out bunt single and moved to second as Haggard was hit by a pitch. The rally ended there, though, as Dulmes hit a routine ground ball to Sams at second to end the game.
The Lady Pirates will be at Frenchtown Tuesday and at Whitefish Thursday.
