ST. IGNATIUS — There was no better way to end the regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Eureka at home May 12. The win improves the team’s record to 17-2, which is a season best for MAC softball, according to head coach Susan Weaselhead.

Florence stands at the top of Western B-C rankings with MAC in second and Ronan third.

“It’s nice to see, and it’s a nice goal for the girls,” Weaselhead said.

The Lady Bulldogs easily took the opener in five innings, 13-1, and again 13-5 in the second game against Eureka.

Kinley Pope hit home runs in each game, including a three-run hit in the first. Janeal McDonald also smashed a home run in the second game.

Loren Erickson pitched both games and went 3 for 4 at bat.

Sara Nerby and Erickson both picked up a pair of RBIs, and Alyssa Doty and Pope had three in the first game.

“The girls played really well. I was able to get all my subs in the game, which is very important during this time of the year. It lets them see some varsity play and get that little bit of experience,” Weaselhead added.

Also last week, the Lady Bulldogs broke the Breakers of Loyola, 10-0, in Missoula May 10.

“The team is just really being able to adjust to different situations and different pitchers,” Weaselhead said. “They are just really coming together as a team and are focused and able to make adjustments during the game to score.”

Weaselhead predicted the Lady Bulldogs will face Ronan Friday at 5 p.m. in the team’s first matchup in Divisional tournament play.

“Ronan is a tough team; they got some great hitters and good defensive players,” Weaselhead said. “We are just going to have to come with some focus and hopefully shut them down.”
