ST. IGNATIUS — Despite the rain last week, the Mission Bulldog teams had some brilliant performances against Superior April 24 and Troy April 27.

“We tied with Superior, 3-3, which is really good,” said head girls’ coach Sara Ison.

Sarah Bowers lost to Cary Chamberlain 2-6, 0-6, but Ison thought the match was well played by Bowers.

She said she has been teaching her players patience by adding a heavy topspin to their groundstrokes, which slows down the ball, instead of returning the straight power shot.

The technique worked as Jane Makepeace defeated Superior’s Kate Bullock, 1-6, 6-0, 6-4. Kayla Billette and Briar Ahlborn also picked up wins over their opponents.

“Kayla and Briar are just really tough third and fourth seed players and that’s been showing in scores,” Ison said.

At Troy, the Lady Bulldogs picked up five wins to win the meet.

Bowers went to work and defeated Holli Higgins 6-2, 6-3 and Makepeace took out Emily Anderson 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Billette also won defeating Alissa Pepiot 6-2, 6-4 and Ahlborn trumped Jazmin Bienek 6-1, 6-0.

The duo of Randi Butterfly and Laura Eggeling won by default, while Cecelia Koskela and Cierra Dougherty lost to Kellie Lundin and Katie Lundin 0-6, 1-6.

“Our doubles teams are still pretty new. Everyone but Cierra are first year players,” Ison said. “(But) Cecelia and Cierra always, no matter the score, always try to win. On any given day you just never know and that’s what I tell my girls all the time.”

The boys’ teams lost to Troy 5-1 with the only victory coming from Chris Camel’s win over Casey Graff 6-4, 6-0.

Both Mission Bulldog tennis teams’ matches against Loyola Sacred Heart April 27 were rained out and have been rescheduled for May 7.
