News from Killdeer Artisans Guild

ARLEE — Killdeer Artisans Guild and Hangin’ Art Gallery are honored to have a special memorial exhibit of artworks by recently deceased Montana artist, Malcolm “Magpie” O’Leary. The show celebrates his life and artistic vision, and will be on display until Oct. 6 at Hangin’ Art Gallery on Highway 93 N in Arlee.

O’Leary’s artworks explore the passions and questions that occupied his imagination, observations and dreams. Featured in this collection will be a sampling of his paintings, drawings and excerpts of his writing, giving the viewer an opportunity to gain insight into the shaping influences and artistic themes expressed in his work. Included in this exhibit will be some of his round ‘tondo’ shield paintings, linking nature and spirit. Viewers will be introduced to his lifetime’s body of work, including some that have not been previously displayed. O’Leary writes that these images express his commentary of, “scenes I have lived or witnessed, or have learned about in contemporary legend.”

A lifelong artist who grew up in Havre, O’Leary received his Bachelor of Fine Arts with honors from Montana State University. Later, he received his Master of Fine Arts from Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. He was a founding member of Killdeer Artisans Guild. His work has been shown in regional shows, and is held in both private and public collections widely.

A closing reception will be held on the afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 6, from 4–6 p.m. We hope you will join us as we send off our good friend and his living legacy of artistic creation.
