POLSON – The homecoming weekend for the Polson Pirates and Lady Pirates was packed with athletic competitions, including football, girls’ soccer, boys’ soccer and volleyball.

Homecoming kicked off with the Lady Pirate soccer team playing against the Whitefish Lady Bulldogs. Polson showed its true strength and overwhelmed Whitefish in a 2-0 victory. The Lady Pirates picked up a well-needed win in conference play.

Both Ashley Howell and Sophia Moderie netted goals and assists in the Thursday evening game. Goalkeeper Kallie Finkbeiner recorded a shutout and six saves.

“It was a good game, it’s nice to send Ashley (Howell), our lone senior, out with the win on her final home game,” said Lady Pirate head coach Jamie Whealon. “It’s also nice to beat Whitefish during homecoming and force a three-way tie atop the conference standings.”

The boys’ soccer team had a match against a very tough Whitefish Bulldog team. The Pirates did not fare well against their conference opponent in their last meeting in Whitefish two weeks ago. The Bulldogs’ defense stifled the Polson offense and shut out the Pirates 5-0.

In Thursday’s game, the first and only goal scored in the first half of the game did not come until the 33-minute mark off the foot of a Whitefish player.

The first score of the second period came just eight minutes into the match and resulted in Whitefish taking a 2-0 lead and the Pirates playing from behind the rest of the game.

Mack Moderie scored the first goal off a Robin Erickson assist at the 69-minute mark for the Pirates. However, minutes later Whitefish scored once again to take a 3-1 lead.

Moderie made it a one-goal deficit at the 77-minute mark for the Pirates.

With about one-minute left, Moderie put the game-equalizer over the keeper’s head on a penalty kick that tied up the game with no winners.

“It was a great game to be a part of. I am really proud of the way our guys kept fighting their way back into the game,” Pirates head coach Adam Fansher said. “I thought we were a little unfortunate to be down going into halftime, and we had some really good chances to score in the first half that didn’t quite go in. After going down 2-0, the boys really stepped it up and created a lot of problems for Whitefish, and we had them on their heels for the last 25 minutes, and the goals started coming for us.”

In football, the visiting Whitefish Bulldogs overpowered the Pirates in their 38-0 Northwest A Conference victory on Friday evening. The Bulldogs dominated on both sides of the ball from the opening kickoff to the final snap, racking up 470 yards of offense and limiting the winless Pirates to only 71 total yards of offense.

On Saturday, the Lady Pirates’ volleyball team added to homecoming week win with 24-26, 25-20, 25-20, 25-18 over the Ronan Maidens.

“Tonight, was a great win for us,” Polson head volleyball coach Lizzy Cox said. “After a pretty close loss earlier this week to Whitefish, we knew we needed to come out strong against Ronan. I was so happy after
