POLSON – The Mission Valley Animal Shelter has announced it will participate in the second annual Black Cat Appreciation Day. The event will be held Friday and Saturday, Aug. 17 and 18, from 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the shelter on North Reservoir Road in Polson. According to Pam Gibson, one of the local event organizers, and a member of the shelter’s board of directors, Black Cat Appreciation Day was started as a Facebook event to educate the public about the plight of black cats and to dispel the myth of black cats bringing bad luck.
“Black cats are the least likely to be adopted from shelters, as are black dogs, and are five times more likely to be killed for their fur than any other color,” Gibson said.
All black cats, even those with a little black on them, will have discounted adoption fees at the shelter on these two days. Adoption fees for cats will be $35 for these two days, which includes vaccinations, spay/neuter and micro chipping.
“Even if there is no black on a cat, we will tie a black ribbon around the cat’s neck so as to qualify for the adoption discount,” Gibson said.
Pet owners who have had or currently have a black cat are encouraged to come to the shelter to post a picture of their beloved pet on the community board. In addition to refreshments, there will be games, drawings and prizes, especially for the children who attend with their parents.
There is no charge for participating in the event. If you cannot attend the event, please go to the MVAS Facebook site and post your black cat picture. The event is sponsored by Anderson Broadcasting and KERR Radio. MVAS is a privately-funded animal shelter in the Mission Valley operating a shelter for companion dogs and cats since 1992. It receives no governmental funding.
Donations to the Shelter have been down significantly over the past several years and continue to get worse.
“This is ‘your’ animal shelter, so please actively support it,” Gibson added.
