The Maidens got off to a hot start this season at the Tip Off Tournament in Columbia Falls and Whitefish, beating Libby 32-28, before falling to Bigfork 31-16 the following day. New head coach Clayton Curley says he’s extremely proud of how his team is playing so far this year, especially when it comes to defense.

“For the first two games, the girls have shown a lot of heart,” Curley said. “Libby had a ton of turnovers, and we held them to only 28 points.”

With the Maidens’ defense firing on all cylinders, Curley noted his team needs to work on offensive skills, more notably shooting.

“We need to shoot better, but we’re doing good,” he said.

Against Libby, Ronan junior Courtney Clairmont put up 15 points, 10 of which came in the second half to help lift her team over the Lady Loggers. Clairmont hit two 3-pointers and made five of eight free throws.

“Courtney came out and scored well,” Curley said.

Raymi Clairmont scored another six points, while Ashleigh Lynch added four.

On Saturday, the Maidens traveled to Columbia Falls, where they took on preseason No. 1 Bigfork Vals. The Maidens hung in with the Vals when it came to turnovers, with Bigfork winning the battle 24 to 17.

Lynch led the Maidens with seven points, while Ashley Grandchamp finished with three.

“We need to capitalize on our shots,” Curley said. “My girls have no quit in them. We got Bigfork down to five points, and could’ve taken the lead if we made more shots.”

With most of the season still in front of Ronan, Curley says he’s excited for what’s to come.

“I like the hustle and defense my girls had,” he said. “I’m impressed with them listening and staying focused. It’s only gonna get better. I have a lot of hope.”

The Maidens will take the court this Friday at home against Florence.
