Daniels finishes 6th at State B-C tennis tournament

MISSOULA — Bulldog Karl Daniels was one game away from competing in the State B-C tennis boys singles championship, but lost to eventual tournament winner Colter Mahlum of Bigfork. Mahlum went on to defeat Ronan’s Hunter Shima for the title. Daniels battled his way through the bracket by first defeating Chris Nagata of Loyola, 6-2, 6-1; Andrew Haggarty of Troy, 6-3, 6-3 and Austin Zomer of Conrad, 7-5, 6-1. After losing to Mahlum, Daniels entered the consolation bracket, losing to Lane Norberg of Valley Christian, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. Daniels ended up taking sixth after losing to Zomer.

In the opening round, teammate Felix Sonntag lost to Conrad’s Konnor Bjelland, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Troy Bontrager lost to Shane Parks of Bigfork, 6-1, 6-0; Chris Camel lost to Mahlum. In the consolation bracket, Bontrager lost to Ronan’s Spencer Sucha, 6-1, 6-3; Camel lost to Cut Banks Jerry Pitman, 6-0, 6-4.

The doubles duo of Harry Suta and Katz Yelsa had a bye the first round but lost to a team from Conrad. R.J. Blood and Zeeshan Ali lost to a team from Bigfork, 6-3, 6-0.

In the consolation bracket, Suta and Yelsa defeated the doubles team from Loyola, 6-4, 6-2; but then lost to Conrad’s team, 7-5, 7-5. Blood and Ali were defeated by Conrad, 6-1, 6-2.

The Bulldog boys’ tennis team ended their season with eight points at the Class B,C State tournament in Missoula.

Jane Makepeace was the only girl who qualified for the State tournament. Makepeace lost Conrad’s Kristine Warlick in the first round, 6-2, 6-3. In the consolation bracket, Makepeace eliminated by Chester-Joplin-Inverness’ Sadie Brown, 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3), but her run ended after losing to Darby’s Brianna Massey, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
