News from Lights Under the

Big Sky Committee

RONAN – Gazillions of tiny lights outlining barns, a vintage pickup, even a tepee, make Lights Under the Big Sky more than live up to its name. The event’s hours are 5 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 13 and 14 and Dec. 20 and 21.

The event is a family-pleasing way to spend an evening with Santa’s house at the North Pole, a festive Christmas Market in the Lake County Community Center, kids’ crafts and games and entertainment each night.

Broom ball will be a new attraction, set up by the Mission Valley Ice Arena Association. According to Hilary Lozar, MVIAA member, broom ball is a fun and easy hockey-style winter sport. All equipment is provided. “We hope to see many smiling faces, engaging in a friendly, laid-back game.”

Games will be supervised by the MVIAA between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. each night and will be first come, first served. Each game will last about 15-20 minutes (or longer, by popular demand). The broom ball court will be located north of the fair barns. People can walk through the barn or go around the west side to find the court. “We encourage everyone, regardless of skill or experience to come and give it a try,” Lozar said.

Music for Dec. 14 will be provided by pianist Trish Tavenner at 7 p.m., and later, Nathan Eyre will perform. On Dec. 15, children from Nkwusm, the Salish language school in Arlee, will provide music at 7 p.m., followed by the Mennonite choir.

Before the entertainment, visit the Mission Valley Animal Shelter Collection Corral to donate items dogs and cats need. Please check the list and find something you can bring to help furry friends during the winter season. The MVAS’s wish list includes: cat food (Diamond Naturals Indoor cat formula) or kitten food (Taste of the Wild Salmon and Venison formula); dog food (chicken and rice formula or anything grain free), puppy food (Nature’s Balance puppy formula from Costco; animal collars (Martingale style); dog treats (with no food coloring); poop scoopers; wire crates; folding wire play pens; long-handled floor squeegees; cat litter (wood pellets from Western Bee); dog toys (Kongs, Nyla bones, squeaky toys, ropes, etc.); leashes, canned food for dogs or cats; 8.25 percent solution bleach; thank you cards; printer paper; towels; sheets; blankets; dog beds; kitchen trash bags, 39-gallon sized; and toilet paper.

“We have so many animals that come in; there’s just never enough food,” said Launa Benson, president of the MVAS. She also added that they desperately need volunteers. Please call the shelter at 406-883-5312 or go to missionvalleyanimalshelter.org if you have time to spend making an animal’s time in his or her kennel less lonely.
