POLSON — The Lake County Sheriff’s Office will have a new face as the sheriff’s second-in-command beginning Feb. 12, when Det. Dan Yonkin will take over in Karey Reynold’s stead. Reynolds, who held the undersheriff position for just more than a year since Jay Doyle was elected sheriff, resigned from the job Friday, citing a restructuring of the position as grounds.
“I am no longer the best man for the job,” Reynolds stated in a letter to Lake County citizens.
The job is changing somewhat to allow for more supervision of patrol officers, Doyle explained. The new undersheriff’s duties will be mostly managerial, while the lieutenant (a position currently held by Mike Sargeant) will take over supervision of patrols.
“I want to add two additional patrol sergeants … it will put supervisors on both day and night shifts — more supervision, more accountability,” Doyle said.
Reynolds said he feels his strengths as a supervisor would be better employed elsewhere due to the changes.
“I feel it’s cheating the citizens of Lake County to stay there and hamper what the sheriff is trying to accomplish,” Reynolds said. “(The restructuring) is not a bad decision, any way, shape or form … it’s not what I agreed to when I took the job.”
Yonkin, who ran for sheriff in 2010 against Doyle and Det. Steve Kendley, brings two decades of law enforcement experience to the position.
“I think that Yonkin will do a great job … he’s been with the Sheriff’s Office long enough to know the intricacies of the job,” Doyle said.
Reynolds said he has “no plans whatsoever” but won’t move to another position within the Sheriff’s Office.
