Kenney powers Polson over Ronan

The No. 4 Polson Lady Pirate basketball team was handed its fourth loss last week, but picked up a decisive win over Ronan, improving its record to 16-4 overall.

Polson began its week on the road against Ronan, where the Lady Pirates used relentless defense and top-notch scoring to bury the Maidens from the start.

Polson led 12-2 at the beginning of the second and headed into the break with a comfortable 22-4 lead. It was more of the same in the second half, as Polson was able to cause turnovers, disrupting the Maiden offense. Polson ended the game on a 15-10 run to capture a 43-10 victory.

Riley Kenney continues to shine, scoring 25 points, going 10 of 18 from the floor and a perfect five for five at the free throw line.

Heidi Rausch contributed six points, while Anna DiGiallonardo added five.

For Ronan, Ashley Grandchamp led the way with six points, while Raymi Clairmont had the remaining four. With the loss, the Maidens fell to 3-9 overall.

On Thursday, Polson hosted No. 2 Stevensville in a battle of premier Class A teams. The Yellowjackets pulled out to a 12-7 lead in the first quarter, but Polson picked up its game in the second, outscoring Stevensville 15-6 to regain the lead at the break, 22-18.

At the beginning of the fourth, Stevensville pulled within two points and went on a 16-4 run in the fourth to secure a 46-36 win.

Kenney led Polson with 13 points, while Mackenzie Banner stepped up and delivered eight points. Mariah Hamel added another six.

For Stevensville, Kyla Paulsen scored 16 points, while Alycia Sims finished close behind with 12.

Polson fell to 9-3 with the loss, while Stevensville improved to 9-2.

The Lady Pirates played Eureka Jan. 31 and host Columbia Falls Feb. 4.
