Olson ordered to pay restitution for bad checks

A St. Ignatius man pleaded guilty at District Court in Polson on May 13 to issuing a bad check, which is theft-by-common-scheme and is a felony.
Kane Olson, 20, was initially charged with two counts of issuing a bad check, but the charges were amended to theft-by-common-scheme as part of a plea agreement that allows for restitution to both victims and a time for reflecting on the fact that two bad checks were written.
According to court records, Olson wrote a check on June 21, 2019, for the amount of $1,046.76 to purchase hay. Olson also wrote another check on Aug. 23, 2019, for $12,946.09 to a private citizen for undisclosed work. Both checks were written on an account in Olson’s name and were returned for insufficient funds. When Olson failed to cover the checks, criminal charges were filed.
The plea agreement calls for a joint recommendation of sentencing being deferred for three years and Olson paying restitution to his victims. District Judge James Manley set sentencing for July 1.
