LAKE COUNTY – Old computers, televisions, or cell phones often fall to the back of the closet as we update our technological devices; however, that waste shouldn’t be tossed in the garbage.

On June 27, Lake County residents can drop off used electronic devices at the local transfer station to be recycled.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, electronic devices are made of valuable materials like metals, plastics and glass. “It’s beneficial because otherwise it goes into the landfill,” said transfer station administrative assistant Dawn Bocksnick of recycling the material.

If those materials end up in a landfill, manufacturers must use other resources to extract and refine those materials. If they’re recycled, they can be transformed into new electronics.

According to the EPA one million recycled cell phones can yield 35 thousand pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold, and 33 pounds of palladium. Companies would have to mine those materials from the earth if they didn’t utilize recycled material.

Residents can drop off their electronic waste at the transfer station from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The first 300 pounds of electronic waste from any individual or company can be recycled for free. Every pound over 300 pounds will cost 10 cents.

The items allowed include MP3 players, microwaves and printers. Air conditioners and exercise equipment are not allowed. For a full list of items that will be accepted, visit the Lake County Facebook page.
