News from the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church quilters
POLSON — The quilters at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church have just completed another successful year of quilting. Six to ten ladies meet on Monday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon to tie the guilts. They start quilting in September and work until Thanksgiving. They then take a break during the Christmas season. Quilting resumes the first of the year and continues until the truck picks them up in May.
Quilt tops are made at individual homes prior to group meeting at the church. At the church a sheet is put on a quilting frame, then a batting is added and the quilt top on is tied with a colored yarn to enhance the colors in the quilt. One of the ladies hems the guilts on machines housed in the church loft they all work in.
The quilts are then counted, boxed, and weighed for shipping in the spring, usually in May. They are transported by semis to Minneapolis and from there are put on cargo containers and shipped to third world countries.
The Good Shepherd Quilters boxed 216 quilts into 38 boxes, weighting 597 pounds. The truck picked them up on May 7 in front of the church and took them to Missoula to be put on a semi headed for Minneapolis.
The quilters have also donated quilts for auctions, benefits and have sold some as well.
