Mack Days week 8 results reported, fishing pole found

FLATHEAD LAKE – The spring Mack Days event ended May 16. During the eighth week of fishing, a total of 25,051 lake trout entries were entered, so far. The final totals for the event will soon be tallied.  

Mack Days fishing events are sponsored by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Up to $225,000 in cash and prizes are awarded.

Turning in $100 tagged fish were Felix Gauci, of Stevensville; Ryan Cloo-Clinton; Kolton Turner, of Kalispell; and Julie Duncan, of Polson. There were two $200 tagged lake trout turned in by Jason Mahlen, of Kalispell, and Mike Benson, of Lonepine.

Kolton Turner leads the anglers, so far, with 1,725 lake trout entries and an 18-day average of 86.89. He had turned in 10 perfect 100 total fish days during the event. Jason Mahlen is second with 1,629 and 83.06. In fourth place was Mike Benson, of Lonepine, with 845 and 41.61. 

Fifth place went to Steve Benson, of Spokane Valley, with 779 and 40.89. Ken Varga, of Kalispell, took sixth place with 735 and 38.33. Seventh place went to Sam Cusker, of Bigfork, with 721. Eight place went to Larry Karper, of Florence, with 703 and 38.17. Travis Banyai, of Kalispell, was ninth with 689 and 36.83. Tenth place went to Tyler Varga, of Kalispell, with 704 and 35.72. 

Julie Perkins leads the ladies with 287. Second went to Connie Jones, of Kalispell, with 74. Third went to Nicole Peters, of Missoula, with 44. Fourth went to Lisa Cloo-Clinton with 39, and fifth place went to Laurie Kreis, of Huson, with 33.  

In the golden oldies category, first place went to Larry Karper with 703. Second went to Jack Kirkland, of Missoula, with 553. Larry Ashwell, of Missoula, took third place with 391. Fourth place went to Marty Herak, of Polson, with 141, and fifth place went to John Gauci, of Florence, with 73.  

Matt Guckenberg, Jr., of Kalispell, received first place in the 13-17 category with 269. Larry Karper’s lost fishing rod was caught by Sam Cusker on Saturday. Cusker heard of Larry losing his fishing rod and left it for him to identify, and sure enough, it was his. In the 12 and under category, Brodie Smith, of Kalispell, was first with 209.
