POLSON — On a sunny but cold December day, Andi Hurtig tipped her head to the side and considered the sleigh she was painting on the window at Jackie M’s Footwear. She’d already decorated the windows of the Wolf Den, the Crow’s Nest Gallery, Pop’s Grill, and Gull Printing, making downtown Polson more festive for the holiday season. She takes what the businesses will pay or will trade for her window scenes since she’d be buying Christmas gifts with the money anyway.
Her personal goal is to get people to stop, look at the windows and say, “Oh isn’t that cute,” and then go in the store and do some local shopping. A schoolteacher for 17 years, Hurtig now works part time at the Crow’s Nest Gallery and substitutes in Ronan. With her schedule, she paints about one window per day.
Hurtig got her start as an artist when her granddad allowed her to draw on her walls before he painted them. She also paints chairs and Montana Nana Baby Shoes.
As far as who will clean the windows after the holidays, Hurtig said, eyes twinkling, “it would be a great community service opportunity for someone.”
