Editor,

This year has already been extremely busy with increased numbers of people coming to our doors all summer. Now, part-time summer jobs are coming to an end, and many of our community’s young people are returning to school. This is the time of year when, more than ever, people need a helping hand.

Our farmers, ranchers and home garden growers have been generously supplying the Bread Basket with fresh produce, which is a real treat for their neighbors in need. Thank you for sharing. Please, as you are coming to the end of this harvest time, keep the hungry in mind. The Bread Basket Board is so grateful for what we receive from our faithful community, whether it be food, time (as in our dedicated volunteers) or in the financial assistance we desperately need.

We are extremely grateful to the newspapers who patiently help remind us of our neighbor’s needs, as well as the grocery stores, the local businesses (including our local butchers), the schools, community organizations and the many, many individuals who remember others who may be less fortunate and who reach into their patched pockets and share what they have. Then there is the Tribe and Salish Kootenai College, whose staff and students generously support the Bread Basket’s goal of providing food for our hungry neighbors. Everyone is working together to support our community effort. Thank you one and all.

Once again as fall approaches, you have an opportunity to stretch your dollars and make them count for a much-needed extra bit. The Town Pump of Butte is starting their annual “Be A Friend In Deed” campaign. It will run from September through the end of November. Remember that for every donation given to the Bread Basket during that time, the Town Pump will donate the same amount of money up to $5,000. This money will be used here in our local area to help feed those in need. Our local Town Pump stores will also collect donations to be used for our communities. So feel good, like your money counts for something good, and support the drive “To Be A Friend In Deed To Those In Need.” Thank you.

By the Town Pump’s charitable donation in meeting the community’s financial generosity, we will be able to make sure we can feed the needy throughout the long winter when work is hard to find. Remember, each person can make a difference by his or her caring contribution. Thank you for your continued support. May God bless each and every one. Yours gratefully,

Sherri McDonald
