Editor,
Sitting here scrolling through the Internet Thanksgiving morning, I see this headline: “A NATO air strike in southern Afghanistan has killed seven civilians, six of them children.”
Granted, our U.S. troops can’t often tell Taliban from regular civilians. Granted, many of the warlord-type leaders in various areas of Afghanistan are not Taliban but are possibly supporting the Taliban. Granted, our military likes the idea of drones, that remote-style push-button killing. Granted, we never did find Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan. Granted, the U.S. is making more enemies than we are killing over there. Granted, our young troops are often put in impossible situations and expected to fight an enemy that is ill-defined, hard to distinguish from the regular population, and fighting in ways for which our conventional warfare training was, in many ways, not designed.
Yes, granted all this, this Thanksgiving Day we are being asked to give thanks for all the blessings being heaped upon us and not to worry because our wise and medal laden military leaders, our dedicated fighting forces, our superior weapons capabilities and our victories on the “killing fields” in other countries will assure our safety, our prosperity, our world domination and our beautiful future.
Ah, yes, and let it be known: Thanksgiving Day 2011 was a day the turkeys finally won.
