Editor,

The Salish Institute is a newly formed nonprofit organization that strives to improve the health, culture, education and environment of the Salish and Pend d’Oreille people. We hope to leverage human and capital resources to initiate, coordinate, and support activities and programs that promote cultural identity and strengthen tribal communities.

We truly believe that we can build an organization that is grounded in tribal values and brings hope to future generations. We aspire to create a safe place of learning and offer year-round healthy positive activities such as culture camps, language classes, community building and wellness activities.

As we embark on this journey to build an organization for the benefit of our local tribal community, we are asking for your support.

We recently received our 501 (c)(3) nonprofit status that will allow us to carry out these wonderful ideas. In addition, we have a goal of creating an endowment that could provide funding for positive programming within our community for future generations.

We are asking for your support. Two tribal members, Echo Brown and Chaney Bell, have pledged $6,250 each from their Sept. 12 settlement payment toward the creation of an endowment fund.

We will need to raise at least $25,000 to start an endowment fund with the Montana Community Foundation. We are asking tribal community members to pledge $1,000 from their settlement payment to the Salish Institute to help create a healthy community and build strong identity amongst our tribal people.
