MISSOULA — The Polson cross-country team turned in some fast times at the Mountain West meet in Missoula Sept. 29.
“It was a great effort by the whole team against some amazing competition,” head coach Matt Seeley said. “Every single Polson runner improved his/her time from the previous week in Polson, but I know they can run even faster.”
Hallie Hovenkotter, Amanda Stobie, Tel Motichka, Cade Howlett, Cash Sisler and Rylee Andrews also had significant improvements over their times last year on the same course.
For the girls, Tegan Bauer, Sandra Crossett and Hovenkotter battled hard and pushed each other, finishing with just seven seconds separating the three runners. JV runner Benedetta Basile was the biggest improver, dropping more than two minutes from her previous time.
For the boys, Travis Hayes led the top three, all under 18 minutes and freshman Thunder Morales had his best race of the year in 19:17. Jared Rubel was the biggest improver from last week, dropping 90 seconds.
Of course the story of the day was the Polson Middle School girls team beating all of the bigger Montana schools to win the Mountain West title and stay undefeated for the 2012 season. They have two more meets left to finish off an incredible year.
“Middle school coach Chris McElwee has done an incredible job with this group, and the future looks bright for Pirate cross-country,” Seeley said.
