HAMILTON — The Chiefs and Maidens cross-country runners made their mark at the Hamilton Invitational last weekend, with the Ronan boys placing third overall and the girls earning fourth.

“Our times were not as good as we would have liked to have seen, but that seemed to kind of be the way it was for all the runners; times just weren’t as fast on this course,” head coach Noelle Decker said. “I don’t know if it is all the twists and turns the course takes or what but the kids commented on how well they felt running this race and then when they saw their times they were disappointed … I told the kids we aren’t going to worry about the times, and our focus needs to be on next week’s conference championships.”

Ronan’s top five boys were separated by just over a minute.

“Our sixth boy, Rhett Duffey, was within six seconds of our fifth boy as well, which helps in providing some depth to the boys’ team,” Decker noted.

Zach Wagner did not run due to some hip flexor problems but Decker expects him back for the next two weekends.

On the girls’ side, Kiana Howell ran a strong race and looked better than Decker has seen her all season long.

“She was disappointed with her time but still placed 16th overall,” Decker said. “Our girls are young, and our expectations for them each week are to improve their times and narrow the gap between (the first and fifth) runners.”

Decker added that the dynamics of the girls’ team is unique in that there are three exchange students, and beyond the top two runners, the way the rest finish changes each week.

“I was very pleased with Darian Delauranti’s efforts at Hamilton’s meet; she is young but works hart to improve each week, moving into our sixth slot this past weekend,” she said. “Coming into conference championships, we need three girls to really step up and post some PRs.”

Ronan will host the Western B championships Saturday at the Mission Mountain Golf Course.
