And so it begins. The construction crew arrived early on Monday, May 1 and started tearing out the ceiling and built-in circulation desk. The space looks so huge when it’s empty. Our library staff has worked so hard over the past few months to pack up and move out everything we want to save from the building. We are so grateful to the people who have volunteered from our community in packing boxes of books, moving books and furniture to storage and to the church, and helping us by taking and reusing things we no longer need. We are just getting started on this project and are looking forward to a great summer.

We want to let you know of our upcoming closure dates. The staff needs a day for unpacking, organizing and training, so we will be closed Friday, May 12 for a Staff Development Day. We will also be closed the Saturday before Memorial Day and Memorial Day Monday to give all of our staff a much deserved three-day weekend.

Do you know a child between the ages of 6 and 12 who would like to write to a pen pal from another Montana library? As part of our summer reading program, we are joining a library pen pal group. This is a great way for children to learn how to write a letter and fill out an envelope, as well as connect with kids from across the state. Registration is required, so stop in or give Felicia a call to sign up. Our Summer Reading Program is going to be amazing. Registration begins June 12.

Amid our move and renovation, we have added a really exciting opportunity for our county. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is dedicated to inspiring a love of reading by gifting books free of charge to children from birth to age five. The project was initiated in Montana by First Lady Susan Gianforte, and sponsored by the Treasure State Foundation in partnership with The Dollywood Foundation. With the help of the Friends of the North Lake County Public Library, the North Lake County Public Library District is the affiliate for all children in Lake County (except Arlee, which has its own program). We will have a kick-off registration day on Wednesday, May 31 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the library (301 16th Ave. E) with goody bags, cookies and drinks. You can also register your child anytime online at www.imaginationlibrary.com or stop in and see us on a different day and we will register your child so they may receive a new book each month, delivered right to their home.

We would like to welcome our two newest trustees to the library board, George Simpson and Valerie Rogers. Thank you for volunteering your time to serve.

Keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for progress photos of our renovation. We know everyone is curious about what it looks like inside. Please do not enter the building. The doors may be open so the crew can easily come and go, but that does not mean the building is open – even just to use the restrooms (in fact, you can’t anymore anyway – they’re gone). Hard hats and safety gear are required. Please respect the crew as they are trying to work as safely as possible.

Our hours are Monday – Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at our temporary location. Curbside pickup is available for everyone during open hours.  Please call us at 406-883-8225 or email us at polsoncl@polson.lib.mt.us with questions or to request curbside pickup. Visit our website at www.northlakecountylibrary.org for more info.
