RONAN — Ronan hosted the 6B and 7B cross country championships Saturday at the Mission Mountain Country Club just west of Ronan. Eight teams participated; as Florence and Troy do not have a cross-country program, teams competing included Bigfork, Deer Lodge, Eureka, Loyola, Plains, St. Ignatius, Thompson Falls and Ronan.
On the girls’ side of competition, Loyola took home the team trophy, capturing first place with a score of 45, followed by Plains in second place with 62 points; Bigfork in third with 76, and Ronan placing fourth with 107 points, according to Ronan coach Noelle Decker.
Makena Morley of Bigfork took a lead early on, finishing over 2.5 minutes faster than the second runner with a time of 16:56. Teammate Chelsea Olsen finished fourth overall with a time of 19:49, but the Loyola girls were difficult to match up to as they finished second, eighth, 10th, 12th and 13th.
On the boys’ venue, Paden Alexander of St. Ignatius took a strong lead to capture first place, finishing in a time of 15:56. The point spread between first and second place in the boys’ race was 15. Bigfork clenched first place with a team total of 53 points. Ronan claimed second place with 68 points, and Thompson Falls took third; just one point behind Ronan with 69 points.
