Editor,
When a political party’s views, policies and stands on social issues begin run counter to sensibilities and the invasion of privacy of the American public, the American public soon begins to wake up and look around in amazement and true concern.
Such is the case with Sen. Todd Akin from Missouri with his very insensitive comments and belief in such as thing as “legitimate rape.”
The entire Republican Party can consider itself “shot in the foot” simply because one maverick has carried a basic party platform to a very uncomfortable and destructive level with such a comment.
It behooves any political party to look very closely at just what social issues, especially, it backs and supports in the name of party solidarity. There will always be someone who will build upon that social issue and take it to that very uncomfortable and destructive level.
If it takes playing upon the emotions of the American public about social issues, instead of concentrating upon the major issues surrounding our nation, which is on the slippery slope to second-rate status as a nation. Heaven help us.
