Editor,
One has to wonder why anyone would seek to run for public office, especially the legislature. The hours are long; the pay is lousy; you will never please everybody; and to top it all off, you have to be in Helena for four months in the winter without a court order.
But thank God for people like Carmine Mowbray, who are willing to serve their communities by doing this service. Not for ego, nor for glory, but to actually represent those of us who live here in Lake County.
Sen. Mowbray was selected by the Lake County Commissioners over many very qualified applicants, including one of her current opponents, to serve out the vacancy created by the previous office holder. The commissioners made the right choice.
I first met Sen. Mowbray when she came back from the session during a break and found her to be extremely approachable. I presented my concerns about certain issues to her, and she took them to heart and quickly responded to them. Her background in business has obviously given her the benefits of dealing with the public and being honest at all times, which, when it comes to politicians, is an extraordinary accomplishment. Even when Sen. Mowbray was persuaded to go against me on an issue, she had the integrity to let me know that she was doing so and why. I don’t expect everyone to agree with all my positions, but when someone has the integrity to tell you they can’t support your position, it is a lot better than lying to your face, as so many others will do.
While I do believe that no one should be handed an office unopposed, I also think there needs to be some reason to run other than a perceived notion of entitlement. I hope that is not the case as to why her opponents decided to contest her nomination.
In any event, the voters of Lake County have the ability to make the right choice for who is to represent them in the upcoming legislative session. That best choice has to be Sen. Mowbray.
